‘A Place in Between’ at Espacio Gallery showcased work from a hugely diverse national and international group of artists, in a variety of interpretations and mediums reflecting moments in the artists’ lives when they found themselves in movement – either through space or state of mind. The interface between life experience and the artistic process can be a strange mysterious world of half glimpsed effects and ideas, but this is also the place in between life events where creative sparks are born. The exhibition combines photography, printmaking, painting, 3D and mixed media.

Patrick Altes was born in Algeria of French and Spanish origins and, as a child, was part of the exodus towards France once Algeria achieved independence. Since then he has lived extensively in Ecuador, South America and, most recently, the United Kingdom.

Virtual Exhibition of Edward Akrout

In the fall of 2013, artist and actor Edward Akrout was left immobilised due to a back injury. Despite paralysing pain, the vibrance and life of New York city pulled Akrout from his isolation, leading him to see his surroundings and its individuals with a new and pure vividness. This renewed sensitivity to the world around Akrout is captured in his mixed media compositions which exist somewhere between landscapes and the mood in which one sees them. They pull the viewer into scenes where distinctive patterns of light, half-obscured figures and abstract linework come together to reproduce the artist’s overwhelming and immediate sensory rush, each serving as a small piece in Akrout’s narrative journey from injury to health.

Irini Gonou

Irini Gonou was born in 1955 in Athens. She studied sculpture at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts and then at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs, where she has also worked as a workshop assistant for two years at the section of ceramic sculpture.

Islam Zian Alabdeen

Born in Khartoum, Sudan, Islam Zian Alabdeen studied Applied Arts at the University of Sudan. He spent the years following study exhibiting extensively in his native country and Europe, and developing workshops for adults and children. A contemporary painter, Islam produces colourful romantic abstracts in oil on canvas.

Hamad and Ali were a Pop Art duo who enjoyed presenting the Arab culture and history through their contemporary vision by using digital art base and mixed media on canvas in attempt to create their own principle, No Rules, in their artworks. Coming from two different backgrounds, Hamad and Ali found a common ground through their collaboration that bridges all cultural and political differences between east and west proving to the world that art strips all conflicts to bring creative minds together.

Ugur Caki

Ugur Caki, an emerging contemporary artist, was born in Izmir, Turkey. During his education at Dokuz Eylul University, he participated in several group exhibitions, including helping to organise the Izmir International Ceramics Symposium. His art developed and began to reach maturity after he founded his first studio in Urla, Zeytinalan, where he started working on the techniques of bronze moulding. He then further refined his technique and perhaps the most distinctive feature of his works is his contemporary interpretation of classical deities, which later became the panache of his signature style.

Born in Aleppo, Syria, Khaled graduated from Beirut Arab University with a Bachelor’s degree in Law and Political Science in 2009. After graduating, as a self-taught artist he sought to discuss the nation’s complexities through his artwork.

Shurooq Amin

Born to a Kuwaiti father and Syrian mother, Dr Shurooq Amin is an Anglophone poet, a contemporary artist, a certified interior decorator and a professor at Kuwait University. The distinctive quality of her paintings is perhaps on her raw exploration of modern Arabian Gulf society, metaphorically stripped to reveal the truth. Her images do not profess to demean or criticise, nor to glorify or exaggerate.
