The breathtaking process of transformation. Lahd Gallery is evolving. Join us on our journey.
Putting contemporary MENASA (Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian) art on the map has been Lahd’s mission for over a decade. We originally launched our gallery in 2005 in the city of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Back then, the Gulf region was depleted of local contemporary spaces showcasing works by emerging artists and in particular female artists. Lahd Gallery was both a pioneer and a game-changer, marking a new era of development and a powerful representation of ideas, philosophies, and qualities.
Acknowledging people’s achievements and celebrating their dreams is a pretty powerful thing. This is something that contemporary artists didn’t have in my region back in 2005 and this something that I personally had to attempt on my own in my life. Giving that platform, for me, is everything. H.H. Dr. Nauf AlBendar
Moving to London, United Kingdom in 2010, Lahd positioned itself at the forefront of contemporary MENASA art, creating a level playing field for those with something to say and who are unafraid to question societal norms. It offered one the freedom to be present, to be seen, to be different and to be universal. We revel in the chances we took, the progress we made, and the artists we championed for over a decade. From sleepy towns to bustling cities worldwide, we single-handedly witnessed an intimate connection develop between Lahd’s artists and the rest of the world. The gallery has not only served as a modern day agora, but also as a mean of representing emotions, cultures and events that helped understand the lives of people in regions one may not be too familiar with.
Ever since, the face of the Gulf region’s art scene has changed, growing exponentially in both vision and presence with galleries and festivals steadily emerging and major players making solid investments. Paris’ iconic Louvre has launched in Abu Dhabi, a grand feat of architecture featuring sacred mosaics, whilst Saudi Arabia’s Misk Art Institute and Art Dubai continue to raise awareness, sparking an unprecedented level of growth and unending global interest.
In 2015, Lahd Gallery’s founder H.H. Dr. Nauf AlBendar was nominated as a Distinguished Honouree at the UN Millennium Development Goals: 2015 Progress Award. This prestigious accolade acknowledges key leaders who work tirelessly towards a better world. Lahd is just one of the ways H.H. challenges the formula – giving a voice to artists who may have otherwise been forgotten. Taking place near the eve of Lahd’s 10th anniversary, the United Nations’ recognition further signified that the gallery’s mission had been accomplished.
When something has outgrown its own skin, it’s time to evolve. Lahd is ready to spread its wings and become what it was destined to be – an advocate, protector, and educator for MENASA art. H.H. Dr. Nauf AlBendar
Today, we stand as the trusted guardian of MENASA art and the advocate of cultural creativity. You’re invited to join us on this next phase of our story. Let’s continue to make history.
